Cardiac CT Launch Event at Waurn Ponds
Posted May 4, 2026

On Thursday 30 April, Radius Imaging was pleased to welcome members of the Geelong medical community to Waurn Ponds for the launch of its new advanced cardiac CT technology. The event was hosted by radiologist Dr Matthew Morey, with support from Dr Ian Revfem, and brought together referring clinicians to explore the expanding role of cardiac CT in contemporary cardiovascular assessment.
Advancing Cardiac Risk Assessment
Dr Morey opened the evening with a discussion on coronary calcium scoring, outlining its clinical value in improving cardiovascular risk stratification. He highlighted how calcium scoring enhances the accuracy of traditional risk calculators, delivering significant net reclassification improvement by more precisely identifying patients at higher or lower risk. This is particularly valuable in the intermediate-risk group, where clinical decision-making can often be less certain. The discussion also addressed limitations of calcium scoring and reinforced the importance of appropriate patient selection, including those who may not benefit from the test.
The session then progressed to CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA), a non-invasive imaging technique performed with IV contrast that requires appropriate preparation, including heart rate control (ideally <60 bpm) for optimal image quality. CTCA provides detailed luminal assessment of the coronary arteries, including grading of stenoses, and offers additional anatomical insights such as evaluation of coronary variants, stents, and bypass grafts. Referral pathways and Medicare eligibility were also outlined, including indications for patients with suspected coronary ischaemia who are at low to intermediate risk without biochemical or ECG evidence of ischaemia, those requiring exclusion of coronary anomalies or fistula, and patients undergoing non-coronary cardiac surgery.

A series of clinical cardiac cases was then presented by A/Prof Stephan Foy, further demonstrating the practical application and diagnostic value of advanced CT imaging in real-world scenarios. The case-based discussion encouraged engagement among attendees and highlighted the evolving role of cardiac CT in improving diagnostic confidence and patient outcomes.
Following the presentations, guests were invited on a guided tour of the practice, including a practical demonstration of the newly installed system. The evening showcased the introduction of Victoria’s first Siemens SOMATOM Pro.Pulse Dual Source CT from Siemens Healthineers, representing a significant advancement in cardiac imaging capability for the region.
This state-of-the-art technology enables advanced, low-dose CT imaging and expands local access to CT Coronary Angiography and Coronary Calcium Scoring, supporting more timely and accurate diagnostic assessment for patients across Geelong and surrounding communities. The launch reflects Radius Imaging’s ongoing commitment to investing in innovation that enhances patient care and strengthens collaboration with referring clinicians.
