What is an MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a sophisticated medical imaging procedure that uses a strong magnetic field, radio waves and advanced computer technology to produce highly detailed images of the inside of the body.
Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation. It is considered one of the safest medical imaging techniques available and is widely used to examine soft tissues, joints, organs, nerves and blood vessels.
MRI creates high-resolution images that can show differences between healthy and abnormal tissues. This detailed information can help doctors investigate symptoms, diagnose conditions, assess injuries and plan or monitor treatment.
MRI is the preferred imaging procedure for investigating many different problems and conditions throughout the body.
What can an MRI be used for?
MRI is particularly useful for examining soft tissues and can be used for a wide range of examinations, including:
- Musculoskeletal – including the knee, shoulder, wrist, hamstring and other joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments.
- Spinal – providing detailed images of the spine, discs, nerves and surrounding tissues.
- Neurological – including the brain and nerves.
- Body – including areas such as the liver, prostate and adrenal glands.
- Angiography – producing detailed images of blood vessels, including those in the brain and kidneys.
Your GP or Specialist will determine whether MRI is appropriate based on your symptoms, medical history and the information needed to assist with your care.
